Donning my trusted Olang Bucefalo OC Winter Snow Boots I popped into my nearest ski hire shop, while on a family holiday in Valtournenche, Italy. €14 was the princely sum for a full days hire, including a couple of adjustable walking poles.
The showshoes are very quick and simple to put on. It's just a quick adjustment of a couple of buckles to ensure they hug your particular size footwear and you are ready to go. One of the most appealing aspects of snowshoeing is its accessibility. Unlike skiing or snowboarding, snowshoeing doesn't require extensive training or experience. If you can walk, you can snowshoe.
I spotted a signpost for a trail while skiing a few days earlier, so thought I'd give it a try. At this juncture I should point out something, which I sort of knew about, but which became apparent during the walk. That is - don't go alone! Especially if you don't know the area. Despite it being a gloriously sunny day, which resulted in me having to peel off layers quite quickly after starting, the weather can turn - very quickly. I experienced this 45 minutes into the walk as I walked down into a deserted valley, where a freezing cold and very strong wind howled down off the Matterhorn.
I was suddenly very aware of being on my own, quite a way from any piste or chair lift and certainly out of hearing range of anyone. Despite having a mobile, I could have been in trouble if I'd had an accident, or lost my way. So, slapped wrist and lesson learned!
Despite this rookie error, the outing was AMAZING!
Snowshoeing offers a unique way to connect with nature. The quiet that comes with a snowy landscape allows for an almost meditative experience. Wildlife sightings are common as you get away from the human dominated piste and chairlift areas. The Alps are known for their breathtaking scenery, and snowshoeing provides an intimate way to enjoy these views. From the silence of a snow-covered forest to the awe-inspiring vistas of mountain ranges, the views are unparalleled.
The secondary benefit is the exercise! Snowshoeing is not only enjoyable but also an excellent workout. It's a great way to improve cardiovascular fitness, build endurance, and strengthen muscles.
