Turning Point in the ICEGRIPPER Calendar

The last few days of October and the first few days of November always mark a turning point in the ICEGRIPPER calendar.

Clocks change in the UK going back one hour, indicating shorter daylight hours. Although this is a man-made construct, it reflects real world activity, namely the Earth's Northern Axis pointing away from the sun. This results in the Northern Hemisphere receiving less warming sunlight - hence Winter.

Consequently, this is the time when the ski season in the southern hemisphere finishes (because the Southern Axis of Earth points towrds the sun and receives more warmth - so they start to experience their Summer) and the ski season in the Northern hemisphere starts.

This year 2024, snow has come early to several parts of the Alps and at the time of writing, a dozen ski resorts are already open in Europe.
