Water Resistant and Waterproof Footwear

Waterproof Footwear – Important Information & Disclaimer

At ICEGRIPPER we want our customers to understand exactly what “waterproof” means when it comes to winter footwear, and what the realistic performance expectations should be. Many of our winter boots include waterproof materials, membranes, and construction methods – but they are not the same as fully enclosed rubber boots (e.g., wellingtons).

Products bearing this icon are classed as Waterproof

This page explains what waterproof footwear can do, what it cannot do, and how to care for it to maintain performance.

1. What “Waterproof” Means in Winter Footwear

When a boot is described as waterproof, it typically means:

✔ Waterproof Materials

The outer materials and/or internal membrane (such as sealed seams, waterproof membranes, treated leather, or synthetic uppers) are designed to prevent water passing through under normal use.

✔ Protection From Common Conditions

Waterproof boots generally provide effective protection against:

  • Wet snow
  • Light to moderate rain
  • Slush, puddles, and surface water (when not submerged)
  • Short-duration exposure to moisture

✔ Breathable Performance

Many waterproof membranes block water from entering the boot while allowing moisture vapour (perspiration) to escape.

2. What Waterproof Boots Cannot Do

✘ Not the Same as Wellington-style Rubber Boots

Waterproof winter boots are not fully rubber, do not form a watertight “shell”, and are not designed for prolonged submersion in water.

✘ Not Suitable for Standing in Deep Water

Activities such as wading, pressure washing, fishing, or standing in water for extended periods may allow moisture to enter the boot.

✘ Water Can Still Enter From the Top

Any boot—regardless of membrane—will allow water in if:

  • Water runs over the top of the boot
  • Snow enters around the collar
  • The laces or zip openings are not properly secured

✘ Not Waterproof if Incorrectly Cared For

Waterproof materials require maintenance. Without regular cleaning and re-proofing, performance naturally degrades.

3. Important User Considerations

A. Exposure Time Matters

Waterproof membranes resist water penetration, but prolonged exposure, pressure from deep water, or bending at stress points may allow seepage.

B. Heat Sources Can Damage Waterproofing

Drying boots near radiators, heaters, or fires can warp materials, causing cracks or delamination that compromise waterproof performance.

C. Fit Affects Performance

If boots are too small or too tight, stress at flex points increases the likelihood of moisture ingress.

D. Insulation vs. Waterproofing

Waterproofing does not automatically imply high insulation. Always check temperature ratings separately.

4. Care & Maintenance Requirements

To maintain waterproof performance, we recommend:

  • Cleaning off mud, salt, and contaminants after each use
  • Using appropriate waterproof sprays, waxes, or conditioners depending on the material
  • Re-proofing regularly, especially after heavy use
  • Allowing boots to dry naturally at room temperature
  • Removing liners or insoles (if applicable) to promote drying
  • Avoiding machine washing or submerging boots in water during cleaning

Failure to maintain boots will reduce waterproof effectiveness over time.

5. Manufacturing Standards & Variations

Different brands use different waterproofing methods, including:

  • Seam-sealed waterproof construction
  • Internal waterproof membranes (various technologies)
  • Treated leathers
  • Weather-resistant synthetic fabrics

Performance varies by model, materials, and construction. Full details for specific products can be found on each manufacturer’s website.

6. Warranty & Limitations

Most manufacturers offer warranty coverage for material or manufacturing defects affecting waterproof performance. Warranty coverage does not apply to:

  • Damage caused by misuse or neglect

  • Exposure to conditions beyond intended use

  • Normal ageing and wear

  • Lack of proper maintenance or re-proofing

  • Water entering from the top of the boot

ICEGRIPPER follows each manufacturer’s warranty policy for assessment and replacements.

7. Summary

Waterproof winter boots offer excellent protection for snow, slush, wet surfaces, and everyday winter use, but are not intended to function like fully sealed rubber boots.

Understanding the intended use and limitations helps ensure comfort, performance, and product longevity.
