Instinct XX 20-24L Trail Vest & 2 x 600ml Soft Flasks
An expandable 20–24L trail running vest developed for multi-day races, ultra-distance events and self-sufficient adventures.
Weighing 620g, the INSTINCT XX combines a large rear access door, expandable roll-top storage, a removable top pouch and extensive front and rear organisation. Available in one colourway and supplied by ICEGRIPPER with 2 x 600ml soft flasks.
Expandable capacity for multi-day adventures
Some routes require more than extra food and another clothing layer. Multi-day races and self-sufficient adventures may involve carrying overnight equipment, additional hydration, navigation devices, extensive safety kit and protection for changing conditions.
The INSTINCT XX adapts between 20L and 24L, allowing its capacity to be matched more closely to the equipment required.
Use the streamlined configuration when carrying less or expand the independent roll-top section when additional space is needed. This adaptability makes XX suitable for everything from long ultra-distance events to multi-day stage races and lightweight overnight adventures.
The next step beyond X8
The INSTINCT XX starts with 2L more capacity than the X8 18L and expands to provide up to 6L more, while adding only 74g.
That additional capacity is supported by more comprehensive organisation, including an expandable roll-top compartment, removable upper pouch, 3L hydration-bladder pocket and extra-large overlapping rear storage.
XX is therefore the better choice when self-sufficiency, equipment separation and adaptable capacity matter more than minimising pack weight.
Immediate access through a large rear door
The main compartment opens through a large rear door, providing a clear view of the contents and straightforward access to packed equipment.
Instead of repeatedly removing items through a narrow opening, the door design makes it easier to find clothing, food or safety equipment directly. This saves time and reduces unnecessary repacking during long events and in difficult conditions.
Expandable and segmented storage
The storage system divides equipment between the principal compartment, an independent roll-top section, a removable top pouch and accessible external pockets.
The roll-top provides additional volume when required and can be compressed when carrying less. The removable top pouch keeps smaller equipment—such as a first-aid kit, headtorch or compact tools—separate from larger items.
A stretch-mesh pocket over the top pouch provides immediate storage for a rain jacket, gloves or compatible solar charging panel.
Durable Cordura construction
The XX is constructed throughout from Cordura Nylon 6.6 ripstop, providing the durability needed for repeated use on mountain trails and extended adventures.
The hard-wearing material helps resist abrasion from rocks, vegetation and equipment carried inside or outside the pack. This makes XX particularly suitable for routes where a lightweight racing vest may not provide enough protection or carrying strength.
Vest-like comfort at maximum capacity
Despite its larger capacity, XX is designed to retain the close, high-sitting feel of an INSTINCT trail vest.
A 3mm perforated EVA back panel provides cushioning while allowing heat and moisture to escape. Breathable 3D mesh across the shoulder straps and back panel further encourages ventilation during sustained efforts.
Adjustable front sternum straps and elastic side-lacing help keep the load close while allowing the fit to be adapted as clothing layers and pack volume change.
Front-mounted hydration included
The upper front pockets accommodate either 600ml soft flasks or hard bottles up to 750ml.
ICEGRIPPER supplies the XX with 2 x 600ml soft flasks, providing 1.2L of immediately accessible front-mounted hydration.
For longer or more remote routes, an independent rear compartment accommodates a hydration bladder of up to 3L. Keeping the bladder separate makes it easier to refill without disturbing clothing, food and equipment stored elsewhere.
Extensive front storage
Two extra-large vertical zipped pockets provide secure storage for a phone, GPS, keys, wallet, first-aid supplies and other important items.
Two additional zipped shoulder pockets help organise smaller essentials, while two extra-large mesh pockets provide rapid access to food, gloves, a hat or equipment required while moving.
This arrangement keeps hydration, nutrition and other frequently used items at the front rather than buried inside the principal compartment.
Extra-large rear stretch storage
An extra-large 2-in-1 storage system on the lower rear uses overlapping stretch-mesh pockets to organise clothing and other accessible equipment.
These pockets are particularly useful for wet waterproofs, gloves or items that need to be stowed quickly. Keeping them outside the main compartment also helps separate damp equipment from dry clothing and overnight kit.
Carry overnight and bulky equipment
Rear attachment points allow a sleeping mat, compact tent or similarly shaped equipment to be secured outside the vest.
External carrying capacity preserves space inside the pack for clothing, food, safety equipment and other essentials. It also makes the XX suitable for lightweight trekking and fastpacking as well as multi-day trail races.
Sleeping mat, tent and attachment accessories are not included.
Pole and alpine-equipment attachments
XX provides three front and rear attachment options for carrying running or trekking poles.
Dedicated rear fixtures also accommodate an ice axe or ice tool and a compact snow shovel for suitably equipped winter and alpine adventures.
The vest is compatible with both the INSTINCT Ergo Quiver I and Ergo Quiver II, allowing runners to add a dedicated quick-access pole system. Quivers, poles and alpine equipment are sold separately.
Optional additional hydration
XX is compatible with the detachable INSTINCT Ergo Bottle Pocket.
This optional accessory can be positioned vertically or horizontally and accommodates bottles from 1.5L to more than 2L. It also adds a zipped pocket and an overlapping mesh pocket for nutrition or smaller essentials.
The Ergo Bottle Pocket is sold separately.
Built for winter and self-sufficient routes
The combination of expandable capacity, durable Cordura construction and dedicated winter-equipment attachments makes XX particularly useful for extended cold-weather routes.
There is space for waterproof clothing, insulated layers, spare gloves, additional headtorch batteries, emergency equipment, extra food and compact winter traction. Segmented storage helps keep essential items organised as conditions and equipment requirements change.
Always carry ice grips, running spikes, crampons or micro-crampons inside a separate protective storage bag. This prevents their metal points from damaging the vest, soft flasks or other equipment.

WATER-RESISTANT STORAGE
Cordura Nylon 6.6 ripstop provides excellent durability and abrasion resistance, but the vest should not be treated as completely waterproof. ICEGRIPPER recommends using waterproof inner bags or protective cases for electronics, sleeping equipment and other water-sensitive items.
