What makes this race unique? Unlike conventional marathons on asphalt or trails, this event unfolds on the frozen surface of Tisleifjorden, a stunning fjord situated 819 meters above sea level in the Norwegian municipalities of Gol and Hemsedal, about 200 km north of Oslo. The fjord's thick ice—up to 80 cm deep—makes it sturdy enough to support cars, emergency vehicles, and, of course, 500 determined runners.
Participants have two race options: the half marathon (one lap of 21.1 km) or the full marathon (two laps). Despite the icy terrain, runners can maintain a pace close to their usual speed since the course is completely flat—arguably the flattest race you’ll ever run! However, running on ice requires a different technique, one that can be quickly mastered with the right preparation and gear.
The Frozen Lake Marathon is meticulously planned to ensure runner safety. A team of ice experts continuously monitors conditions leading up to and throughout the event. The final race route is only confirmed days before the race to ensure optimal ice stability. Historically, this route has been used for winter car testing, making it a reliable surface for an extreme running experience.
Traditionally held in late March, the 2025 edition has been pushed to mid-April due to logistical adjustments related to access for winter vehicle testing. While this change may bring slightly milder temperatures, runners should still expect classic Arctic conditions.
For those who love a challenge, there’s an existing course record to chase. Jackie Stretton, a UK runner, set the women’s record in 2019, completing the marathon in an impressive 3 hours, 20 minutes, and 44 seconds.
This isn’t just another race—it’s an adventure. Whether you’re an experienced ice runner or a first-timer looking for a unique challenge, the Icebug Frozen Lake Marathon promises an unforgettable experience. Are you ready to lace up, grip the ice, and make history?
