Choosing between Mammal winter boots is less about finding the “best” model and more about deciding how much weather protection, leg coverage and convenience you need.
Across the current Mammal Winter Boots range, the common theme is practical winter footwear with the OCSystem retractable ice grip built directly into the sole. Where the models differ is in waterproof protection, boot height, fastening style, fit and the type of winter use they are best suited to.
ICEGRIPPER has put together this guide to make those differences easier to understand.
| Model | For | Weather Protection | Height | Warmth | Fit | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amelie OC | Women | Waterproof | Ankle / shin | HeatMX™ to -30°C | True to size | Easy everyday winter use |
| Iona OC | Women | Water resistant | High ankle | Fleece lined | True to size | Cold, mainly drier winter conditions |
| Taylor OC | Women | Waterproof | Ankle / high ankle | HeatMX™ to -30°C | True to size | Versatile everyday winter wear |
| Yukon OC | Women | Waterproof | Lower calf | HeatMX™ to -30°C | True to size | Colder, wetter and snowier conditions |
| Leah OC | Women | Waterproof | Full length | HeatMX™ to -30°C | True to size | Maximum leg coverage with alpine styling |
| Steele OC | Women | Waterproof | Full length | HeatMX™ to -30°C | Slightly narrower | Rugged full-length winter protection |
| Keele OC | Men | Waterproof | Ankle | HeatMX™ to -30°C | True to size | Walking and more rugged winter use |
| Odin OC | Men | Waterproof | Ankle | HeatMX™ to -30°C | True to size | Straightforward everyday winter use |
All of these models incorporate the OCSystem retractable ice grip system, allowing the on/off traction to be deployed on icy surfaces and folded away again when they are no longer needed.
For many customers, the starting point will be Taylor, Amelie or Odin.
The Mammal Taylor OC is probably the most conventional all-round choice in the women’s range. It combines waterproof protection, HeatMX insulation and an ankle-height profile with adjustable laces and a gusseted side zip. That makes it suitable for commuting, dog walking, shopping, winter breaks and general everyday wear.
Taylor is currently available in Black and Sand.
The Mammal Amelie OC takes a slightly different approach. Its pull-on construction and adjustable drawstring make it particularly easy to use, while still providing waterproof protection, serious insulation and built-in OCSystem grip. It is a good option for someone who wants winter performance without a traditional lace-up boot.
For men, the Mammal Odin OC fills a similar everyday role. Its defining feature is the double hook-and-loop fastening. There are no laces to tie and no side zip, which makes Odin quick to put on, easy to adjust and particularly straightforward for repeated everyday use.
Best starting points: Taylor for a versatile women’s all-rounder, Amelie for pull-on convenience, and Odin for simple men’s everyday use.
Boot height becomes increasingly important when conditions involve deeper snow, slush or prolonged exposure to cold weather.
The Mammal Yukon OC sits between an ankle boot and a full-length winter boot. Its lower-calf construction offers noticeably more coverage than Taylor or Amelie while retaining a relatively manageable everyday profile. Waterproof construction, Berber fleece and HeatMX insulation make Yukon a strong choice for colder winter conditions and snowier trips.
Yukon is available in Black and Brown.
For maximum lower-leg coverage, the women’s range moves up to Leah OC and Steele OC.
Leah has a more classic alpine appearance, with a full-length quilted shaft, faux-fur collar, adjustable front lacing and side zip.
Steele is also full length, but has a more rugged, outdoors-inspired appearance using a mixture of PU nubuck, microfibre suede and nylon. It is also worth noting that our own fitting assessment suggests Steele is slightly narrower than most other Mammal models.
The choice between Leah and Steele is therefore likely to be as much about style and fit preference as outright winter performance.
Most of the current Mammal range featured in this guide are classed as waterproof.
Amelie, Taylor, Yukon, Leah, Steele, Keele and Odin all provide waterproof protection, making them particularly useful for the UK climate where winter often means a mixture of rain, puddles, slush, mud and cold rather than continuous deep snow.
The main exception is Mammal Iona OC.
Iona uses a Raintex water-resistant membrane and internal snow protection but is not sold by ICEGRIPPER as fully waterproof footwear. It remains a warm and practical winter boot, but we would favour one of the waterproof models if regular exposure to prolonged wet conditions is expected.
This distinction is important. “Winter boot” does not automatically mean “waterproof”, and ICEGRIPPER deliberately separates the two descriptions.
Iona occupies a useful position because it is somewhat lighter and less substantial than many of the newer waterproof models.
It has a high-ankle profile, fleece lining, front lacing and a Raintex water-resistant membrane, together with the same integrated OCSystem traction concept.
That makes Iona particularly suitable for customers who want a stylish cold-weather boot for frosty days, winter trips and generally drier winter conditions but do not necessarily need the additional wet-weather protection of Taylor, Yukon or the newer waterproof models.
Iona is currently available in Black and White, with the White version providing a particularly distinctive après-ski look.
This depends on the type of fastening you prefer.
Amelie is probably the simplest women’s option because of its pull-on construction and adjustable drawstring.
Odin is the simplest men’s option, using two hook-and-loop straps rather than laces.
Taylor, Yukon, Leah, Steele and Keele combine adjustable lacing with easier-entry zip arrangements. These give greater scope for fine-tuning the fit while avoiding the need to completely re-lace the boot every time it is worn.
There isn’t one universally better system: it comes down to whether you prioritise speed and simplicity or greater adjustability.
A number of current Mammal models use HeatMX insulation rated by Mammal to -30°C, including Amelie, Taylor, Yukon, Leah, Steele, Keele and Odin.
That rating is useful for comparing the construction of the range, but it should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every wearer will remain comfortable at -30°C. Personal cold tolerance, sock choice, activity level, wind and exposure all influence how warm footwear feels in practice.
It is therefore more useful to consider insulation alongside boot height and intended use.
For example, a full-length Leah or Steele provides considerably more lower-leg coverage than ankle-height Taylor or Odin, even though their stated insulation rating may be similar.
The OCSystem is one of the main reasons Mammal winter boots are different from ordinary insulated footwear.
The traction elements are incorporated into the outsole rather than being a separate ice grip that has to be stretched over the boot. When icy conditions are encountered, the grip elements can be activated; when they are no longer required, they can be folded back into the sole.
That makes the boots particularly useful where conditions change during the same journey—for example, moving between icy pavements, cleared paths, transport and indoor environments.
There is also a significant longer-term advantage: the OCSystem is serviceable.
ICEGRIPPER supplies replacement OCSystem® cleats, activation keys and spare parts for Mammal footwear. That means worn traction components do not necessarily mean replacing an otherwise serviceable pair of boots.
If you are unsure which replacement fitting your boots use, our OCSystem® Reference Page can help identify the correct part.
A useful way to narrow the range is:
There is no single Mammal boot that is right for everybody. The best choice depends on the conditions you expect to encounter, how much coverage you want and how you prefer your boots to fit and fasten.
