Instinct Trail Vest Guide by ICEGRIPPER

How to Choose a Trail Running Vest: The Complete Instinct Guide

Whether you're lining up for your first trail race or packing for a multi-day alpine expedition, choosing the right trail running vest is one of the most important kit decisions you'll make.

Too small and you're underprepared. Too large and you're carrying unnecessary weight and bulk.

This guide walks you through every vest in the Instinct range — from the ultra-minimalist PX 3.1L to the expedition-ready ALPI 40L — so you can match your capacity to your distance, conditions and kit requirements.

The golden rule: capacity follows commitment!

The right vest capacity is determined by three things:

  • Distance — how long you'll be out, and how many checkpoints or aid stations you'll pass
  • Mandatory kit — whether your race or route requires you to carry specific safety equipment
  • Conditions — whether you need to carry extra layers, waterproofs or winter traction

Instinct PX 3.1L — the minimalist's choice

Best for: Road and trail runs over an hour, up to marathon distance, where a full equipment list isn't required.

At just 160g, the PX is the lightest vest in the Instinct range. It sits high on the body, keeping 1.2L of front-mounted hydration and your essentials close without the bulk of a conventional running pack. Think of it as the step between a running belt and a hydration vest.

Choose the PX if: You want to carry hydration, nutrition, a compact rain jacket and safety essentials — nothing more.

Step up if: Your route requires mandatory kit, substantial spare clothing or bulky winter traction.

Instinct Ambition 4.5L — speed meets versatility

Best for: Trail training and racing from 10K to 70K, where you need more than the bare essentials without carrying a full pack.

The Ambition adds 1.4L over the PX while gaining just 30g. That extra space makes room for waterproofs, a spare layer and additional nutrition — making it the go-to vest for runners who want to move fast but stay prepared. Its one-size adjustable fit and double-S elastic side-lacing adapt to different body shapes and clothing layers.

Choose the Ambition if: You're racing or training at distances where conditions can change but mandatory kit isn't required.

Step up if: Your race requires mandatory safety equipment or you need bladder compatibility.

Instinct Evolution 7L — the ultra runner's workhorse

Best for: Longer trail runs and races from 20K through to ultra distance, including events with light mandatory kit requirements.

The Evolution adds 2.5L over the Ambition with just 20g extra weight. That additional capacity makes room for a full hydration bladder (up to 1.5L), extra nutrition, waterproof trousers and safety equipment — without turning the vest into a conventional running pack. Four pole-carrying configurations add further versatility for technical mountain routes.

Choose the Evolution if: You're running ultras, long mountain days or events where conditions and kit requirements may change mid-race.

Step up if: Your race has substantial mandatory kit requirements or you need weather-resistant rear storage.

Instinct X 10L — built for mandatory kit events

Best for: Ultra-distance racing and extended training where mandatory safety equipment must be carried.

The X adds a large 4L U-shaped main compartment over the Evolution — specifically designed to swallow mandatory race kit without burying your frequently used items. A 2L bladder-compatible rear compartment, extensive shoulder strap storage and three pole-carrying configurations make it one of the most organised vests in the range at 297g.

Choose the X 10L if: Your race has a mandatory kit list, you're running in winter conditions, or you need a dedicated large compartment for bulky equipment.

Step up if: You need weather-resistant rear storage or external attachment points for fastpacking equipment.

Instinct Eklipse 12L — when weather is a factor

Best for: Ultra and XL-distance races, long mountain days, adventure racing and fast-and-light outings where weather protection matters.

The Eklipse's defining feature is its 360° water-resistant rear shell — constructed from 30D Nylon 6.6 Cordura ripstop with a silicone lining and waterproof zips. This protects spare clothing and mandatory kit from rain and mountain weather in a way that standard lightweight vests cannot. A wide door-style zip opening and five internal mesh compartments make organisation straightforward even mid-race.

Choose the Eklipse if: You're racing in the mountains, conditions are unpredictable, or you need to keep mandatory kit genuinely protected.

Step up if: You need fastpacking capacity or multi-day carrying volume.

Instinct X8 18L — fastpacking and multi-stage

Best for: Fastpacking, multi-stage racing and extended routes where overnight or multi-day kit must be carried at pace.

The X8 bridges the gap between a trail running vest and a lightweight fastpacking pack. Its 18L capacity and Cordura construction are built for the demands of multi-day movement — carrying sleeping kit, additional food, spare clothing and safety equipment without sacrificing the running-specific fit of the Instinct range.

Instinct XX 20–24L — extended multi-stage capacity

Best for: Multi-stage races and extended fastpacking routes requiring greater carrying volume with a running-specific fit.

The XX's adjustable 20–24L capacity makes it one of the most versatile vests in the range for multi-day events — enough volume for mandatory kit, overnight equipment and multiple days of nutrition, while retaining the high-riding, close-to-body fit that defines the Instinct range.

Instinct ALPI 40L — expedition-level days in the mountains

Best for: Alpine objectives, expedition-level mountain days and multi-day routes where substantial kit must be carried.

The ALPI is the top of the Instinct range — a 40L alpine pack and trail vest for days when the mountain demands everything. It combines the adjustable fit and running-specific construction of the Instinct range with the carrying capacity needed for serious alpine objectives.

Still not sure? Three questions to find your vest

1. Does your race or route have a mandatory kit list?
If yes, start at the X 10L or above. Mandatory kit lists typically require waterproofs, emergency blankets, first aid and navigation equipment that will overwhelm a smaller vest.

2. Will you be out for more than one day?
If yes, look at the X8 18L, XX 20–24L or ALPI 40L depending on the volume of kit required.

3. Is weather protection a priority?
If you're racing in the mountains or conditions are unpredictable, the Eklipse 12L's water-resistant rear shell offers protection that standard lightweight vests don't.
